Addressing Dental Pain While Saving Your Natural Tooth

It wasn’t too long ago that teeth with damaged nerves had no treatment options available, requiring them to be extracted. Today, root canal therapy can serve as the saving grace for your tooth, restoring its health and function. Dr. Phelan will first remove the diseased pulp and bacteria from the inner chamber of the tooth before cleaning and thoroughly sealing the area to minimize further infection. What Happens During a Root Canal?

Despite what you’ve heard, root canals are very straightforward and relatively pain-free; most patients compare the procedure to receiving a dental filling. We’ll start by numbing your mouth and creating a small hole in the affected tooth to access its center chamber, which is the source of the issue. From there, we’ll remove any damaged or decayed tissues, sanitize the tooth, fill it with a biocompatible substance to help it retain its shape, and finally, seal it to prevent future reinfection. A dental crown is usually placed on the tooth after the root canal is performed to further protect it and allow it to function normally.
